Initially a land holding company, laid a firm foundation as it leased land to railways being created throughout the South with the first one operating by 1853. Eventuallly, like many railroads in the late 1800s, succumbed to financial pressures and eventually were handed over and would become the base of the Southern Pacific while they continued a nationwide expansion from California North to Oregon, East to Louisiana and South into Mexico. All during this railroad boom, Southern Pacific was innovating refridgerated box cars allowing California's infamous oraanges and other fresh produce so it could successfully be transported to the Eastern United States. These Hydra-Cushion box cars were created in the 1950s, one of the leading costs were upon receipt of goods being damaged in transport. To solve the issue, shock-absorbing couplers to hydraulically cushion the loads, were fitted to thousands of boxcars, while initially deveopled to greatly reduced damage, not only to the goods, but also extending the life of these innovative box cars.
